A New Beginning: How Olubunmi Kuku’s FAAN Is Raising the Standard for Pilgrim Travel

The transformation of Nigeria’s airports has been a journey of determination, resilience and relentless commitment to excellence for the Olubunmi Kuku-led management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). 

With a clear focus on renewing ageing infrastructure and placing the passenger at the heart of airport development, the Authority has continued to push forward despite the complexities of managing critical aviation facilities.

 One of the latest expressions of that resolve is the newly upgraded Pilgrim Terminal Building at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. 

 A modern facility designed to ensure that for intending pilgrims, the journey to the holy sites begins not with inconvenience or uncertainty, but with comfort, dignity, safety and confidence.At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, that experience is taking a new turn with the successful upgrade of the Pilgrim Terminal Building by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The transformation has received commendation from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN), and the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who recently inspected the facility and expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work and the renewed focus on modernising Nigeria's airport infrastructure.Speaking after the inspection, Keyamo praised the management of FAAN for delivering a facility that reflects the Federal Government's determination to bring Nigerian airports closer to global standards. 

He noted that the upgraded terminal aligns with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its emphasis on improving public infrastructure and creating an environment in which Nigerians can access better and more efficient services.For the Minister, the project represents more than a physical upgrade.

 It is part of a broader effort to reposition Nigeria's aviation infrastructure as a critical component of national development. The renewed facility provides intending pilgrims with a more comfortable and organised environment as they prepare for their journey. 

With a 300-seat passenger waiting area, upgraded VIP and VVIP lounges, free high-speed Wi-Fi and a fully air-conditioned mosque, the terminal has been redesigned with the needs of travellers in mind.These improvements are complemented by enhanced screening and scanning equipment, strengthening security while supporting more efficient passenger processing.For pilgrims who often travel in groups and may spend considerable time at the airport before departure, access to adequate seating, reliable connectivity, comfortable prayer facilities and improved security can make a significant difference.

Ganduje, on his part, commended the current FAAN management for its commitment to transforming the nation's airports through strategic investments in infrastructure and passenger services.

 He expressed delight at the pace of development under the present leadership, noting that the Authority has continued to demonstrate professionalism, innovation and dedication to improving Nigeria's aviation industry.

The commendations from both the Minister and the FAAN Board Chairman underscore the growing significance of the Authority's infrastructure renewal programme under Kuku's leadership. Across the country's airports, the emphasis is increasingly shifting towards facilities that are safer, more functional, technologically enabled and responsive to the needs of modern travellers. 

The Pilgrims Terminal is one expression of that broader vision. Its upgrade also reinforces FAAN's role in supporting the Federal Government's ambition to build a safe, efficient and globally competitive aviation sector.
