FAAN UNVEILS PHASE ONE OF SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME AT MMIA





The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially unveiled Phase One of its Sustainable Waste Management Programme at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, in a significant step towards achieving cleaner, greener and more environmentally sustainable airport operations.


Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, described the initiative as part of the Authority's strategic efforts to advance from Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme while strengthening environmental sustainability across Nigeria's airports.


Mrs. Kuku explained that the programme is designed to significantly reduce the volume of waste generated within airport environments, minimise environmental impact and lay the foundation for future waste-to-power initiatives.


According to her, the Sustainable Waste Management Programme will be implemented in three phases.


She noted that Phase One involves the deployment of indoor colour-coded waste recycling bins strategically placed across airport terminals to encourage effective waste segregation at source.


"This indoor system is the vital first step that will feed into Phase Two, which involves the deployment of outdoor mammoth colour-coded waste recycling bins. These large-scale receptacles will serve as central collection points for sorted waste from across the airport ecosystem," she said.


Mrs. Kuku added that Phase Three will involve the engagement of certified waste management and recycling experts who will collect sorted waste—including plastics, glass, cans and organic waste—and transport them to dedicated recycling facilities for processing.


"This partnership ensures that our waste is not merely moved but transformed into valuable resources," she stated.


The FAAN Managing Director emphasised that the initiative is not merely about complying with environmental regulations or following global trends, but about making sound business decisions that deliver long-term operational and environmental benefits.


"By aligning with the global waste management hierarchy of Re-use, Recovery and Re-cycle, we will effectively account for waste generated within our airports, reduce overhead costs associated with procuring new products and create value through recycled materials," she said.


Mrs. Kuku disclosed that the programme is being launched first at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, before being extended to other international airports across the country in the coming weeks.


She called on airlines, concessionaires, service providers, passengers and all airport users to support the initiative through proper waste segregation and responsible environmental practices, stressing that collaboration remains essential to achieving a cleaner and greener airport environment.


In his remarks, the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Alhaji Umar Ganduje, commended the management of the Authority for introducing an innovative programme aimed at addressing climate change and promoting environmental sustainability within Nigeria's aviation sector.


Also speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, praised FAAN's management for aligning Nigeria's airports with global best practices in environmental management, noting that cleaner and greener airports are now central to sustainable aviation worldwide.


The Sustainable Waste Management Programme was officially unveiled by the Honourable Minister, Festus Keyamo, SAN, alongside the Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, and the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Alhaji Umar Ganduje. The symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed by the Board Chairman to mark the commencement of the initiative.




The introduction of the colour-coded waste recycling bins represents a major milestone in FAAN's commitment to environmental stewardship, carbon reduction and the development of sustainable airport operations across Nigeria.
