NSE President sets tone for 2026 in New Year message
Dear Colleagues,
Today marks not just the dawn of a new year but also the beginning of a significant chapter in the history of our beloved Society. As I address you today in the esteemed role of the 35th President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, I am both humbled and honoured to acknowledge the potency of your support and encouragement all through the journey that has brought us to this destination. I also acknowledge the authority and leadership thrust that this platform bestows.
My journey in the engineering profession has been shaped by years of learning, service, responsibility and trust. Looking back, it is clear to me that no step has been accidental. Providence has ordered this path, placing mentors, opportunities and challenges at different points, each preparing me for a responsibility greater than self. The Nigerian Society of Engineers has provided many of us with a broad and enduring platform. A significant number of my professional relationships and lifelong friendships were forged through the Society. In this sense, the NSE has become more than an association; it is an ideology founded on service, professionalism and shared purpose.
Therefore, I undertake to serve with integrity and a deeper sense of accountability.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my predecessors – the respective and respectable Past Presidents of NSE – for their visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to this profession. Your dedication has paved the way for the successes achieved by this noble Society thus far. As we take up the baton to continue the next lap of the race of leadership for our Society, I am respectfully putting you on notice that we shall run this race together; your uncommon resourcefulness would be valuable as we take on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Distinguished colleagues, as we embark on this journey together, I would like to deliberately emphasise the essence of cooperation and unity within our Society. An association like ours thrives on the collective ingenuity, strength and resilience of its members. Therefore, within our various groups or cells – Council, EXCO, Divisions, Branches or Chapters – we must continue to strive, hand-in-gloves, to uplift the fortunes of our profession in Nigeria. This presidency will be guided by professionalism, ethical practice and constructive engagement with government and industry. It will be inclusive, collaborative, and purposeful. As they say, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If we must live up to the expectations of providing the engineering solutions that will propel our nation to higher altitudes, we must fortify all our flanks.
Looking ahead, I envision a Nigerian Society of Engineers that is rooted in inclusivity and empowerment; a Society where every Engineer feels valued and has opportunities for professional growth and development. It requires us to set aside individual ambitions for the greater good of our Society and the country, engaging with technology and innovation to address the pressing needs of our communities and environment.
The NSE Strategic Agenda has been our guiding compass, shaping our work in membership development, strengthening collaborations with government, industry and academia, expanding our international presence and enhancing our impact on communities. In 2026, we shall continue to refine this agenda, ensuring that our Society remains a force for national progress and for the welfare of all members.
In conclusion, I assure you of my commitment to serving the Society with integrity and fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to me with diligence. I am hoping and trusting in Almighty Allah that TOGETHER, we shall build a stronger, better and more prosperous Nigerian Society of Engineers.
May Year 2026 be filled with successes in every of our individual and collective endeavours.
Happy new Year!
*Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, F.ASCE, FAEng, MFR*
