NDLEA: EDO SPEAKER PLEDGES SUPPORT AGAINST DRUG ABUSE

The Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Chief Adebaku Sheriff Blessing, has pledged his support for the campaign against drug trafficking and abuse. Adebaku made this known in Benin City when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Edo State Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju and the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Drugs and Illicit Trafficking Control, Hon. Oghenovo Andrew, led an anti-drug abuse rally to the House of Assembly as part of activities to commemorate the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The theme is "The Evidence Is Clear: Invest In Prevention."

According to Mitchell, who addressed the Speaker and other top officials of the House of Assembly when the campaign train had a brief stopover at the assembly complex, “this sensitization rally is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking in our communities. It is important to invest in drug prevention strategies to protect individuals and communities from the harmful effects of substance abuse. The NDLEA remains committed to fostering a drug-free society, and with continued collaboration from stakeholders and the public, we can make significant strides in the anti-narcotics crusade.”

In his response, Speaker Adebaku expressed gratitude for the NDLEA's efforts and acknowledged the profound effects that drug trafficking and abuse have on individuals, families, and society at large. “The fight against drug abuse is not only the responsibility of the government and law enforcement agencies; it requires the collective efforts of families, schools, and communities. Together, we can create a safe and healthy environment for our children,” Adebaku stated.

He stressed that increased awareness and education are essential in countering the lure of drugs, which often lead to addiction and crime. He reaffirmed his commitment to support the fight against drug and substance abuse in Edo State and pledged to attend the World Drug Day event.

The rally saw active participation from NDLEA officers, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) medical students from the University of Benin, media representatives, and civil society groups, with participants waving banners and placards bearing messages such as "Say No to Drugs" and "Protect Our Future". The procession aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of fostering a drug-free environment. The campaign train commenced at the popular Ring Road area and terminated at the central motor park.

The rally underscored the critical need for community engagement in the fight against drug abuse. It is part of a broader series of awareness campaigns being launched by the NDLEA and the Edo State Government, poised to create lasting change in the fight against drug abuse and its devastating impact on society. The rally concluded with a call to action, encouraging citizens to reject drug use and become advocates for a drug-free society.
