MMIA terminal will not be pulled down, says FAAN boss
......Renovation will be in phases
The Federal Government will not pull down the over 40 years Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Terminal 1, Lagos, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku disclosed yesterday.
She said the old terminal will undergo major renovation , which will be phased affirming that the ambition may trigger operational challenges.
Kuku explained that as much the facility will not undergo reconstruction, work will start from the departure hall before shifting to other parts of the terminal.
She said FAAN has not issued directives for concessionaires and other users to vacate the facility.
Kuku said :" The Murtala Muhammed International Airport building will not be pulled down. We are not planning any reconstruction . What we are looking at, which will start soon , despite our determination to have had it earlier is going to be phased. We are currently handicapped, because we need to get approvals . There are a couple of options we are considering , but , we will carry all concessionaires along . We are not going to work in silos."
She said FAAN is considering a lot of options , affirming that plans are afloat to deepen operational planning involving technical experts and choice of construction professionals.
Kuku said:" We have plans to fix the terminal two of the same airport . In the master plan, there are issues bordering on terminal expansion . We are looking at how to extend the fingers, the apron and incorporate it into the general airport development plan.
"FAAN is awaiting approvals from the Presidency and the Ministry of Aviation on how the renovation will go. Significantly, FAAN never asked concessionaires to move out of the old terminal. While we await The relevant approvals , we have stopped renewals for concessions because of what is coming , the major renovation and overhaul of the facility.
" The tendency before of continuously carrying out patch work on the old terminal building is no longer fashionable."
The FAAN boss said brand new conveyor belts, aviobridges have been procured for the intended renovation starting soon.
