 Airport toll gates payment to go cashless , contactless, says FAAN

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), said yesterday that it has concluded plans to implement cashless and contactless payment using cards , links and other digital platforms at Access Toll Gates at airports nationwide.
Its Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku disclosed this at the 2025 Directorate of Commercial and Business Development Stakeholders Engagement Forum in Lagos.
Mrs Kuku said the adoption automation and digitalization of payment will begin at the Lagos and Abuja Airports as pilot roll out.
The new arrangement, she said is part of efforts by FAAN to upgrade its automation / digitization payment process , which will drive transparency , accountability and ensure appropriate tracking of revenue.
The FAAN boss also disclosed efforts by the authority to eliminate touting at airports saying concessionaires , including car hire operators and bureau de change operators linked to the unauthorized activities will be severely punished.
She said FAAN will also take drastic measures against petrol tankers parked indiscriminately along the airport , describing it as both a security risk and bad optics for the travel eco -system.
She cautioned against speculation of land around the airport , saying FAAN has updated its data base through the  use of Geographic Information System for land allocation and usage.
Kuku spoke of   plans by FAAN to grow its revenue streams by deepening its aeronautical sources, review of non performing chapter concession agreements.
She also unveiled plans by the airport authority to introduce a slot allocation system for car hire operators , introduction of green energy smart hubs ,which will birth the use of electric cars .
Kuku , however, highlighted the impact of currency volatility, economic pressure , infrastructure constraints as well as compliance with lease terms on its operations.
She listed  further challenges to include prompt payment / contract compliance and others.
The FAAN boss said the authority will be revising the security architecture for passengers' check in at airports, as they will be required to provide their NIN/ BVN , other biometric data in addition to the personal identification cards.
She said very soon FAAN will be reviewing tariffs at airports to reflect market realities and other considerations.
Also speaking, Director in charge of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Adebola Agunbiade said the interface with stakeholders will assist in getting input from players for enhanced planning as the authority leverages increase in commercial flight  activities.
She said FAAN will continue to engage industry players on ways to maximize opportunities for revenue , block leakages foster growth.
