ValueJet Airlines  to slam N1 billion suit against media outlet  over false, damaging report

Solicitors to ValueJet Airlines , Idowu Sofola and Co has concluded plans to file N1 billion suit against a media organization, BusinessDay for what it described as a ‘malicious’ report that the carrier was blacklisted by international aircraft lessors for various contract breaches.
According to the law firm, the report published on July 17th titled, “13 Nigerian airlines blacklisted for contract breaches” was false and untrue with no justifiable ground for the publication which it said has drastically affected the business of its clients.
BusinessDay reported that no fewer than 13 Nigerian airlines have been blacklisted by international aircraft lessors for various contract breaches.
The newspaper listed Aero, Air Peace, Azman, Dana, Green Africa, Ibom Air, Max Air, NG Eagle, Overland, Rano Oil, United Nigeria Airline and ValueJet.
According to the Head of Idowu Sofola Chambers, A.T. Oloyede  the article portrays our client as being unable to meet its financial and contractual obligations and unreliable to do business with by local and international corporations.
He equally stated that the false publication has caused severe loss on the part of its client with the carrier’s board of directors overwhelmed with several phone calls by customers who are already panicking and threatening to withdraw their patronage and investments with their clients due to the false publication.
The firm demanded the removal of the false publication and any other false news against ValueJet  Airlines on any of its news platforms with immediate effect; a three-day consecutive news publication by BusinessDay and its subsidiary and tendering an intense apology to that effect; a retraction of the said false publication in three other widely read newspapers in Nigeria.
Consequently, the law firm is claiming damage in the sum of N1 billion for libel committed by BusinessDay.
