Air Peace to offer lifetime tickets to sports heroes
Air Peace Airlines said it has concluded plans to offer 24 return tickets to contingents - sportsmen - who participated in the Montreal Olympics of 1996 and the team that represented Nigeria in the 1980 African Cup of Nation (AFCON).
The gesture by the carrier, according to its Chairman, Chief Allen Onyema, was part of efforts to reward patriots who have done the nation proud in sporting activities in their prime.
Speaking at a briefing in Lagos at the weekend, the airline chief executive said he was moved to consider how to reward the sports legend for their contributions to national development.
To drive the reward initiative, Onyema said the carrier will unveil the sportsmen as Air Peace Sports Diplomatic Ambassadors at an investiture scheduled for July 28, 2023 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, (NIIA), Lagos.
Describing the role of the sportsmen that boycotted the Olympics 1966 in Montreal, Canada, as part of their response to the apartheid policy in Southern Africa, Onyema said the athletes chose the country above self.
Besides, free 24 return tickets on all domestic routes flown by Air Peace, he said the benefitting sportsmen will also be offered a free international return ticket on destinations operated by the carrier , besides monetary offers to compensate them for their heroic deeds as ambassadors for the country.
Onyema said the carrier was also honouring winners of the 1980 AFCON tournament for their heroic deeds , while calling on corporate organizations to contribute their quota in lifting heros, who have done the country proud.
On the motivation for the gesture , Onyema said : " The airline is doing this to re- ignite the consciousness that serving your country is one of the most patriotic roles to contribute to national development. This idea has been incubated many years ago. Over 43 years after these heroes played their part, there could be no better time than now to reward them. We are doing this to encourage the younger generation, that reward time awaits all. The reward for sportsmen in Nigeria will never be forgotten. This explains why there will be a Wall of Fame and posthumous awards for those that have died.
