Anxiety grips aviation agencies over sack of FAAN boss
Anxiety grips aviation agencies' head over sack of FAAN Managing Director
......Industry players say it is long overdue
.......Urges clean up in NCAA, NIMET, others
Palpable anxiety on Monday gripped heads of aviation agencies including Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority ( NCAA) , Nigerian Airspace Management Agency ( NAMA) , Nigerian College of Aviation Technology ( NCAT) , Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) , Nigerian Meteorological Services ( NIMET) following the sack of the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria ( FAAN) , Saleh Dunoma.
Sources hinted that the removal of Dunoma may spark the process for cleaning up the sector by out going Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who is poised to return to the industry as substantive minister.
Heads of the agencies were on Monday anxious over what might become their fate as Sirika ramp up inauguration of facilities at some airports at the weekend in Lagos, Benin and other locations.
The agency heads are worried over their inability to read the body language of Sirika , who was seen touring airports with Dunoma last Friday , only to be fired on Monday.
When The Nation visited headquarters of FAAN, NCAA, NAMA, AIB, and the Liason office of NCAT, scores of workers were discussing the development in groups.
Some directors in the agencies wore long faces , as the sack of the FAAN boss caught many napping , given the fact that Dunoma at the weekend accompanied Sirika to tour facilities at the airport.
Sirika, the workers noted could not be predicted on the next line of action, as he sought from Dunoma when some projects at the Lagos Airport would be completed , only to fire him in a few days.
Some aviation members, who declined to be named urged the minister to extend the exercise to the NCAA, as the leadership of the apex civil aviation regulator has been insensitive to agitations by workers.
NCAA workers alongside union members last week staged a protest at its headquarters to express their disenchantment over lopsided organogram ; resulting in the scrapping and merger of directorates in the authority.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, industry critic and Chief Executive Officer of Centurion Securities, Group Captain John Ojikutu ( rtd) said the sack of Dunoma was in order , because he needed time to rest after his many years of serving FAAN.
Ojikutu said Dunoma having served as its Director of Engineering and Managing Director for ten years should be commended for achieving the certification of Lagos and Abuja Airports within four years.
He said :" For me he needs rest for almost ten years sacrifice , he should be commended .
" We have been on this certification since 2007 but for his efforts and very little oversight coming from the NCAA, FAAN could not have been where it is today."
He , however, congratulated Yadudu urging him as a young and dynamic professional to tackle head on the arduous task of handling the number of projects he will have to completely execute to move the industry forward.
