Kano, Port Harcourt Airports ready for certification, says FAAN

The Federal Government is ready to complete the certification of Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) and the Port Harcourt airport, in an effort to meet the basic requirements of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for world best practices in the aviation sector.
Speaking to Reporters at MAKIA yesterday,  during the Airport Excellence Safety Review (APEX) for certification of the nation's airports, the Director of Operations, Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Capitan Rabiu Yadudu, said already, representatives of the Airport Council International (ACI World), are on ground for assessment of Kano and Port Harcourt airports.
According to him, "ACI World is a body that is working with all the airports of the world and they provide guidance, information and assistance towards improving airport operations, especially, in terms safety, efficiency and security.
"This is a governmental organization. It is a non-profit organization affiliated with the United Nations, it is also affiliated to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a parent organization that is responsible for regulation and aviation safety.
"So, they have a particular assistance for developing nations. So, they are here to assist us in improving our safety and efficiency at no cost to them.
"It is just a matter of us paying on cost recovery. So, they are just doing it to assist the country and FAAN in improving our operation."
Yadudu revealed that FAAN on behalf of the Federal Government has signed an agreement, "indicating that we have already subscribed to this programme called Airport Excellence In Safety (APEX).
"This is like a complete audit in which we are willing to open our documents, open our airport so that they take a complete audit of our facilities, our documentation, our structures, procedures and process; and of course the personnel.
"It is all about developing and improving on them so that we can have improved safety and efficiency in our airports. So, they audit everything with our consent and we sign for further acknowledge and document that we have already agreed with them.
"So, when they conclude the audit, they will give us a full and comprehensive diagnosis of what we need to do and what we need to keep on doing to achieve our certification."
He added that, "since the President Muhammadu Buhari's government  came on board, we have been trying to do the certification. We commenced sometime last year; and of course I am aware, the process of certification has been going on for the last 11 years, but I know that within the last nine months, we certified two airports.
"This is the first time a country in Africa have certified two airports. Other countries have only one certified airport, but in the last nine months, despite the 11 months delay, we succeeded in certifying Lagos and Abuja airports.
"I believe within the next few months, we shall certify Kano and Port Harcourt; and after wards, it will be Kaduna and Enugu. We are here to do it and we will keep on doing it. It is not all about certification alone, this is one of the ways we are trying to develop and improve our airports. We are also doing other things in collaboration with ACI and ICAO on accreditation.
"We have already subscribed to Airport Service Quality, this is a programme that you have over 300 airports in the world subscribing about improving passengers satisfaction. So, we are doing a lot with ICAO and ACI towards fulfilling government's drive in improving the aviation sector; and as FAAN, we are committed in improving our operations and services.
"So, there is no break, we are consistent. If we can do it in Lagos and Abuja, we can always do it in Kano, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Enugu. We have people that are experienced. They coordinated Lagos and Abuja very competently while working with this organization.
"So we are bringing the same people and the same organization to achieve Kano and Port Harcourt and I am sure they will do a good job, it will be much faster and much more efficient."
