  Fed Govt to ban foreign carriers over refusal to patronize local caterers  The Federal Government has concluded plans to wield the big stick against foreign carriers which refuse to indigenous catering firms in getting meals for their out bound flights. To drive this the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority , NCAA has been directed to ensure compliance with the decision. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo disclosed this yesterday at a stakeholders forum to appraise the performance of the sector. Keyamo said foreign carriers that refuse to comply with the directive will be denied approval by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development for their Summer schedule. He said the will not approve summer schedule for foreign airlines until they show me agreement showing they have partnered with our local caterers,” the minister said.   NCAA to shut down Ibadan Airport for six months The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has announced that the Ibadan airport will be shut down for six months for maintenance and upgrade works to take place. Michael Achimugu, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection made this known on Friday via his X handle. This announcement is coming barely eight months after the state got the approval of President Bola Tinubu, to improve the airport to an international status. In his tweet, Achimugu said, “Subject to new information, Ibadan airport may be shut down for six months for maintenance/upgrade, starting from early March.” In June, President Bola Tinubu approved the move to upgrade the Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, to an international airport. Multiple bird strikes impacting our operations , says Air Peace  Air Peace has reported unexpected flight disruptions due to multiple bird strikes affecting three aircraft within the last 24 hours.   Head of Corporate Communications, Air Peace Limited, Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, emphasized that safety remains the airline’s top priority.   The first incident occurred yesterday, forcing an air return. Earlier today, two more aircraft suffered bird strikes, grounding them for inspections.   As a safety-conscious airline, Air Peace prioritizes passenger and crew well-being.   NSIB releases preliminary report on Hawker 900XP aircraft incident  The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released the preliminary report on its ongoing investigation into the incident involving a Hawker 900XP aircraft, with nationality and registration marks 5N-KAL, operated by Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited.  Spokesperson of the NSIB, Mrs Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji disclosed this in a statement. According to the NSIB's Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, the incident occurred on December 6, 2024, during the aircraft's climb out from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (DNAA), Abuja, en route to Kotoka International Airport (DGAA), Accra, Ghana. There are benefits to the party if it decides to adopt a consensus candidate.   IATA releases 2024 Annual Safety Report  The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its 2024 Annual Safety Report. The industry delivered another year of strong overall performance on safety including showing improvements on the five-year average for several key parameters, but it took a step back from an exceptional performance in 2023. The all-accident rate of 1.13 per million flights (one accident per 880,000 flights) was better than the five-year average of 1.25 but worse than the 1.09 recorded in 2023. There were seven fatal accidents in 2024, among 40.6 million flights. That is higher than the single fatal accident recorded in 2023 and the five-year average of five fatal accidents. There were 244 on-board fatalities in 2024, compared to the 72 fatalities reported in 2023 and the five-year average of 144.   Aviation unions draft document to implement  airports concession  Aviation unions in the country have condemned what they called draft agreement documents being paraded for the concession of some airports in the country without their input. The unions, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) voiced their condemnation of the concession documents at the Congress held today at FAAN Freedom Square.   NATCA calls for recruitment of additional controllers  The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) has emphasized the urgent need to recruit and train additional Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) to man the country's airspace to mitigate fatigue and ensure optimal safety and efficiency in airspace management. Speaking at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos in an interview, NATCA President, Mr. Amos Edino, explained that the current shortage of ATCOs has resulted in excessive workload, prolonged duty hours, and increased stress levels, negatively impacting both performance and well-being.  He noted that ATCOs are often required to work beyond the standard two-hour shift limit per session, with some working four to five hours continuously due to manpower constraints.
